ONE USEFUL IDEA · 007

You might understand each other perfectly — and still disagree

Useful when: You've had the same conversation several times and nothing seems to get resolved.

The idea

When a conversation keeps failing, it's easy to say, “We need to communicate better.”

Sometimes you do.

But sometimes both people already understand each other. They just want different things.

If that's true, explaining yourself again won't solve it. You need to deal with the disagreement instead.

Try this

  1. Ask each person to explain what they think the other person wants.
  2. Correct anything that has genuinely been misunderstood.
  3. Then ask: Now that we understand each other, what do we still disagree about?
  4. Deal with that difference rather than having the same explanation again.

Keep this

Understanding someone doesn't mean agreeing with them.

Why this helps

One person wants to spend more; the other wants to save. One wants more contact; the other wants more space. Two people can understand those positions completely and still disagree.

Calling that a communication problem sends you back towards clearer explanations, better wording and another conversation.

But the words may not be the problem.

Once you know that both sides understand what the other is saying, you can move on to the real job: finding a compromise, making a choice, setting a boundary or accepting that the disagreement is still there.
